Monkeys Getting the Moon

Tomb Sweeping Day |
One night, a group of monkeys are gamboling beside a well. One of them sees the swaying shadow of the moon in the well and shouts: "Oh! My god! The moon has fallen into the well!" Hearing his cry, others decide to get the moon out; otherwise each night in the world will be pitch black. They've come up with an idea. Then, one monkey hangs on the tree up side down, with his hands holding another monkey's tail. Thus a long string of monkeys is formed, with each one holding another's tail. But the tree branch is unable to bear the weight of all monkeys, when they are about to reach the water, the branch breaks with a crunch. All the monkeys have fallen into the well. Today, this tale is used to warn stupid people of the inevitable disaster resulting from creating trouble for themselves. |
