Tomb Sweeping Day |
It's said that the 24th of the sixth lunar month of each year is the day to remember the use of fire by human beings. The Bai, Yi, Pumi and Naxi nationalities in Yunnan have regarded the day their traditional Torch Festival, when they will celebrate with activities to "Plant the Sun". The Bai and Yi people living in Western Mountain, Heqing County usually hold many "planting sun" activities on the Torch Festival, when they will make a huge torch surrounded by piles of firewood in the middle of the singing ground. Right in front of the torch places a section of dry and flammable stub carefully picked out as the symbol of the sun. At the time of sunrise, the people gathering on the ground will hold a well-chosen stick to drill the wood to make fire on the "sun". Once sparks come out of the wood, all people will rush to "receive" the kindling with grass or dry branches, and then try to kindle the firewood with the kindling. After that, everyone will light up their small torches from the firewood and go home to ignite their fire pond, which is called "planting the sun". After sunset, the people will gather on the singing ground again and light up a big torch from the bonfire burning throughout the day. Then the people will sit in a circle around the fire, singing and praising the happiness brought by fire all night. |
