    Deng Shichang - The First Generation of Modern Naval Officers Trained in China

    Deng Shichang (邓世昌; 1849 - 17 September 1894) was a famous Chinese admiral during the late Qing Dynasty era. Native of Panyu, Guangdong; originally named as Yongchang (永昌); courtesy name Zhengqing (正卿).Deng was the first generation of modern naval officers trained in China. He entered the Naval Academy in Mawei, Fujian in 1867 and graduated in 1874.

    Li Lianying (Simplified Chinese: 李连英; November 12, 1848 - March 4, 1911) was a royal eunuch during the Qing Dynasty, and was a favorite of the Empress Dowager Cixi, who was the de facto ruler of China for forty years from 1869–1909. He served as the Head Eunuch (总管太监) until getting deposed in 1908. Li Lianying was known to be dominant in court affairs, controlling everything from the actions of other eunuchs, to which officials could be granted an audience by the Empress Dowager. Such things often involved large amounts of bribery, and Li Lianying made a fortune out of it.
